It can be a bit chaotic crossing borders in Southern Africa and today at Kazungula was no exception. Kazungula is situated at the confluence of the Zambezi and Chobe rivers, the meeting point of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
It is at this point where trucks from Zambia and the Congo carrying copper and other minerals cross into Botswana for the onward journey to the port of Durban in South Africa. The only way to currently do this trip is on the floating pontoon which crosses the 400-metres of the Chobe river. This is a slow process and trucks can wait for many days at the border and as you approach this area you will pass hundreds of trucks waiting their turn. A new bridge is nearing completion, opening in 2021 and this will remove the need to wait to cross the river, saving hours of wasted time for drivers and businesses.
Our Zimbabwean host quickly sorts out the passport control details and we soon leave the chaos behind and can enjoy the one-hour drive to Victoria Falls and your accommodation. It is not unusual to find elephants on the road or spot antelope as we drive along. The town of Victoria Falls is situated inside the Victoria Falls National Park and there are no fences so you may come across warthog, buck or elephants. In all cases you give them space and they will move on.
After an afternoon of relaxing by the pool there is no better way to finish your day than sundowners from the deck of the Victoria Falls Safari Club, watching elephants in the distance as the sun goes down. A fabulous end to another great day.
Tomorrow morning is an early start so that you can watch the sun rise over the falls. It is worth getting out of bed early for this special moment.
