The word halcyon is synonymous with serene, calm, tranquil, peaceful and moreand I can think of no better name to describe this beautiful lodge, situated near the border crossing into Botswana at Pontdrift in North West South Africa.  This idyllic spot was home to us on our first night out of Johannesburg on our way to Fika Futi in the Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana where we will be spending the next six nights.

Halcyon Lodge consists of a number of tents set on stilts and a couple of cabins all built into the rocks on the top of a small hill or koppie as it is referred to in South Africa. The lodge is self-catering and there is a large area known as a boma for outdoor cooking over the open fire and a large fire pit perfect for those nights sitting around with a drink in the hand and talking to new and old friends. Sunset drinks were taken at the lookout which overlooks the wide expanse of this region with never ending horizons, it is the perfect place to sit and relax after the seven hour drive to get here.  What a great start to this new safari adventure.
